Watercolour

I chose this post title because my friend (and photographer) said that it was what my skirt reminded her of.

I am all for making sure that there is always something interesting, different or unique about what I wear to work. When I think about what to wear the next day I always want to incorporate a bright colour, cool texture or something out of the office attire norm. This skirt is one of those perfect pieces. It takes an all black boring outfit and adds that one element of interest that is guaranteed to make you stand out. Coloured nails always help too!

I sometimes turn to Pinterest to get hairstyle ideas and inspiration. I'll be adding this to each post where I did just that. This was my hair inspiration for today. Its just a simple middle parted, low bun. I also added my hair inspiration to the "Suit Seperates" post HERE.

Slacks and the City

There's nothing better than a pair of work pants that are not only stylish but also comfortable.

Office work requires a lot of sitting which can be made that much more uncomfortable if the pants you are wearing are stiff, bunchy or pinch at the waist. These pants from BCBG are the exact opposite! They have just the right amount of stretch, are virtually wrinkle free and have an amazing elastic waist. Its also nice that they are a colour other than black or grey. They are so great that I may have also purchased them in red, on sale of course!

Not-So-Skinny Jeans

I realize that all of my casual friday outfits involve skinny jeans. The truth is, that ever since this fad exploded onto the fashion scene, I have bee neglecting all of my other wide, flared and straight legged jeans. I'm switching it up this week though, with a non-skinny jean ensemble. Wide leg jeans are just as (if not more) appropriate for a casual work days at the office. Since the bottoms are so wide, its best to keep things fitted on top. The easiest thing to throw together with a pair of pants/jeans is the good ol' reliable sweater over dress shirt combo! This layering technique will always make you look polished and professional!

Must Have Mustard

This toned down yellow colour is perfect for the office if you're looking to wear a bit of colour but don't want to blind your co-workers with a bright yellow ensemble. If you want the mustard colour to pop, pair with a black top and dark tights.

The mustard skirt that I am wearing is tweed and therefore perfect for winter. Again, because the skirt is on the shorter side, I recommend wearing tights.

Preppy In Polka Dots

I got bored of wearing solid coloured pencil skirts to work so snatched up this one as soon as I saw it went on sale!

I used to be afraid of wearing anything too out of the ordinary to work but since I started reading fashion blogs and browsing Pinterest on a daily basis, I find that I am more attracted to the items that are not considered your typical office attire. I did initially have to get over the fact that co-workers would give me the once over if I came to work wearing something loud or different, though. I think as long as your skirt isn't too short or blouse isn't see-through, anything is fair game for work, unless you have a strict dress code of course. Stick to wearing one 'out of the norm' piece and pair with a classic item.

Gals of the Golden Globes - CMB's Best and Worst

There were so many amazing dresses at the Golden Globes but also quite a few flops. Here are my best and worst picks.

BEST (in no particular order)

Katharine McPhee in Theyskens' Theory. There's something about the simplicity of this dress that I like.  Plus, Katharine makes it look classy whereas on most others it would probably look trashy.

Kerry Washington in Miu Miu. I love the combination of sheer and sequins. I also love that she chose not to wear a big princess/mermaid dress.

Kate Hudson in Alexander McQeen. This dress fits Kate like a glove. The gold collar and belt also make  what would be a rather plain black dress a lot more interesting.

Naomi Watts in Zac Posen. I love how she is so covered up but still looks extremely sexy.

WORST (again, no particular order)

Lena Dunham in Zac Posen. I'm really not sure what is going on here. Is that a bow in the front? That colour also looks so bland on Lena.

Lucy Lui in Carolina Herrera. I feel like Lucy is too old for this dress. It also reminds me of a pattern you would find on vintage tea cups.

Halle Berry in Versace. I am really disappointed that Halle is on my worst dressed list but there is too much going on with this dress. The busy pattern, a slit, a train, and is that a cutout at her hip??

Taylor Swift in Donna Karan Atelier. Oh Taylor. This dress is not going to make Harry want you back! The neckline is too high and boxy not to mention that material wrinkles so easily. And would it have killed you to put some effort into your hair?

Winter Work Wear

Because the majority of my readers live in climate where the winter's are long and fierce, I'm providing a few easy tips on how to stay warm at the office while still looking stylish and professional.

1 - Plain and simple, wear a sweater. There are so many over-sized sweaters and cardigans out there that look great with slim fitting pants or leggings. One fad that I am really into right now is the aztek sweater. These geometric patterned flowy cardigans look great as is or cinched at the waist with a belt.

2 - Throw on a scarf. A scarf is not only a great accessory in winter but will also keep you toasty warm at work on those cool days when the a/c decides to blare instead of the heat. Does this happen at anyone else's office? There are also so many different colour's and style's of scarves out there which makes matching to outfits effortless.

3 - Insulated booties, aka boots with the fur. Invest in a couple of pairs of warm, lined boots. The shoe stores are swarming with many different types, styles and materials.

4 -Space heater. I know this is not fashion related but my space heater at work has been a godsend! These tiny little miracle boxes are fairly reasonable in price and last quite a long time.

Casual Style Inspirations

There are a handful of ladies out there whose style always leaves me impressed. I'm not talking about their glam, red carpet looks either. Instead, these ladies' casual day to day looks are the ones that I am dying to emulate!

Kate Beckinsale definitely knows how to rock some casual ripped jeans. Do I even have to mention that her hair is always perfect too?

Leather pants and fur vests may not be what you and I consider to be 'casual' but for rich, over privileged socialites like Olivia Palermo, this is as casual as it gets.

Red leather pants on an airplane? Why not. Ashley Tisdale can pull it off.
